I’m a plant ecologist by training, but in graduate school I switched from practical work with plants to working with technology – like computer modeling – to understand broad patterns in plant distributions. However, in order to maintain some connection with living plants, I keep several friends from planting at home and in my office. This spring, looking for a new hobby, I decided to try my green thumb by entering the world of bonsai.

Seven Variety Pack Of Bonsai Tree Seeds
Bonsai is the art of pruning a plant carefully watered to maintain its habit and growth, but in a minimal form (Fig. 1). Pretty much any plant with a woody stem, of which there are myriads, can be grown into a bonsai. This practice began in China as early as 500 BC, where it quickly grew into an exquisite art form representing imagination, creativity, discipline and honor [1, 2]. Now, bonsai is a common concern used by all plant lovers, although its ancient principles are greatly honored in monuments and works of art around the world (exhibit the US National Arboretum and the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum).
The plants themselves can live for hundreds of years (fig. 1), making this activity extremely dedicated and patient for plant lovers. I don’t want to consider myself part of this category (certainly not yet!), but this is a course in bonsai care;
Most seeds have a hard outer coat that develops to protect them from the harsh environment. Because of this time, it is possible to “trick” the seed into germinating, which is the beginning of the growth of the first plant usually reserved for perfect spring conditions. During germination, the seeds use the nutrients stored in the substrate to grow small roots and stems that sprout through the soil toward the light. I bought a starter kit through a foundation that helped me (I used a kit from Garden Republic), which gave me the seeds of four bonsai tree species. To break the outer coat of the seeds, and to create conditions for the seed to start growing, I soaked them in hot water for 20 hours before sowing (fig. 2) [3]. After the small seeds were soaked, I prepared the pots by filling them with soil that had also been moistened with warm water, then I gently pressed the soaked seeds into the warm soil (fig. 3).
Once planted, the chances of germination success are still low. Because seeds have evolved to withstand harsh conditions, they can persist in the soil (known as a “seed bank”) for years before germinating. My starter kit indicated that it could take 30-40 days for these seeds to send small sprouts to meet the soil, so it can be done a month before or know if the germination was successful or not (I now understand why bonsai stands as a symbol of determination!). I placed the pots in the window towards the east, where it received plenty of sun and watered the dry soil.

To my surprise, after a week it started sprouting from two of my bonsai pots! TIME TO CELEBRATE! A week after the first sprouts, I had more and I was ready to germinate. In figure 4, you can see at the top of each sprout a yellow knot, this is the tough seed coat, which was mentioned earlier. It is no longer necessary, as when the leaves begin to grow, the seeds will drop (Fig. 5).
The first sprouting seeds were both conifer trees – known as conifers. These are the oldest trees to develop, retaining needles over time and multiplying kernels. These species have a unique shape (fig. 5); each spindle in the structure is an immature leaf that continues to grow to a true needle shape as the branch grows stronger. Eventually, the green stem will harden and become woody before continuing its growth. At that time bonsai care begins in earnest – I begin to trim the needles and branches so that the tree remains wild, but the growth is stunted. Nothing yet from my other two pots, but hopefully I’ll see some green soon!

A persimmon has a 40-foot spread to bear fruit, but a foot-tall tree can only produce two or three very large fruits. Well, the point is not to feed your bonsai family.
Generally, the bonsai fruit species is the same as a 40-foot fruit growing in an orchard, so the fruit grows in size.
In case you are wondering if you could grow a bonsai so that you can grow smaller fruits, so that you can produce more of them, or look more proportional to the tree, it must be said.
Bonsai Beginnings: Starting Bonsai Trees From Seeds
There is no way to change the size of the fruit that the tree will bring to horticultural users. Size is determined by genetics, and can only be changed by harm.
If you want to display small fruits, choose a species that already has small fruits, such as crabapple or blueberry.
) Cottonwood, key lime, and Meyer lemons are excellent trees to start with. Wild bushes like blueberries are also great to start with.
You can also grow trees with fruit that is more beautiful than edible, such as cotoneaster, small leaf linden or weeping pear.
The Beginner’s No Fail Guide To Starting Seeds Indoors
If you are more up for a challenge, pomegranates, oranges, apples and persimmons are beautiful, and large fruits lead to an attractive neighborhood with shrubs.
As I said before, any bonsai tree can be born, so don’t feel limited. These are the most common options, but if you dream of removing durian, don’t let anything stop you from trying.
Caring for a bonsai fruit tree is not much different than caring for a standard one, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

How To Grow Bonsai Trees From Seed
Some trees require a certain number of chill hours, which is a period of time spent under a certain temperature, to produce. Know which one to grow.
For example, apple trees need an average of 1,000 hours of cooling each year. To keep it simple, choose a species that thrives in your growing zone.
Also, make sure you know how much sun exposure your chosen species needs to produce a crop. Although your tree may otherwise grow thin in lower light, it still does not look beautiful without the sun it needs.
Almost all the fruit trees are fully grown outside. If, hypothetically, you can’t grow the full-sized species indoors, you can’t grow the bonsai or indoor version.

Apple trees cannot grow inside, either full size or small. However, there are a few varieties, such as lemons and oranges, that can grow in warm, sunny areas indoors.
All bonsai should be fed with manure. These plants only have a small amount of substrate to extract nutrients from, so you need to supplement them with nutrients.
