The Japanese maple bonsai (Acer palmatum) is highly prized. Without the Japanese map, the bonsai collection is incomplete. The colorful leaves of different varieties are outstanding (especially in the fall) and the interesting types of growth with excellent branches.
Caring for Japanese maple bonsai is not difficult. For bonsai care, it is important to note that this type likes a sheltered place from the heat in partial shade in the summer. In the cultivation phase, we fertilize the Japanese maple pre-bonsai which is very rich in nitrogen with mineral fertilizers (nutrient ratio N-K-P salt 4:1:2 + MgO). So they grow in 5l pots well 0.5-1m per year and they grow fast. Due to high nitrogen fertilization, the stem and branches quickly become large, which is desirable when planting. Although we use a mineral fertilizer ourselves (with an automatic fertilizer container for water), we do not recommend it to the general public. The salt tolerance of the Japanese maple is not very high and misunderstanding may occur quickly during the dilution.
Organic fertilizers (eg liquid bonsai fertilizers) have the great advantage of being released slowly and giving the tree patience. If you give the tree too much, nothing will happen to it, except that it will grow faster and taller. In addition, all the necessary trace elements are contained that the tree needs.
When it comes to the beautiful style of Japanese maple bonsai, we should pay more attention to balanced fertilization that is not too high in nitrogen. If more nitrogen is supplied, the internodes (distance between 2 nodes in the shoot) are very long.

It is important that the bonsai soil is well permeable to water and air so that it does not become waterlogged. If the soil drains well, it can be watered several times on hot summer days. A lot of water can drain well.
The young leaves evaporate a lot of water during the summer. Usually more than a bonsai pot can provide, and more than you can pour under normal conditions. This can cause the tips of the leaves to dry out. Therefore, it is best to place Japanese maple bonsai in the summer in a partially shaded and sheltered location.
In summer, an outdoor area with sun to partial shade is ideal. Types with small leaves should not receive mid-day sun in the summer (otherwise the Japanese maple bonsai will have brown leaf tips). Part shade is suitable for Japanese maple bonsai. But the color of the leaves of many red varieties becomes slightly green in the shade, as the tree produces more chlorophyll here, which makes it green.
