A bowl containing a single, flowering water lotus plant (Nelumbo spp.) brightens a window or patio. According to the University of Illinois Extension Service, the dwarf lotus does especially well in a small-bowl water garden. A dwarf cultivar is the sacred lotus (Nelumbo “Momo botan”), which is hardy in US Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 10. Potting, proper planting and ongoing care will encourage the lotus to bloom for two or more months. .

A bowl at least 6 inches deep and at least 12 inches wide provides enough room to submerge the lotus rootstock so that the plant’s flowers and leaves float on the surface of the water. Lotuses grow best in heavy soil rich in organic matter, such as potting mix made for pond plants. Fill the bottom of the pot with enough soil to completely bury the lotus rootstock and soak the soil well before planting. You should plant a lotus in the spring to take advantage of its natural flowering cycle.

Lotus Seeds For Planting

As the lotus rhizome breaks easily, handle it gently during the planting process. First, make an angled trench in the wet soil of the bowl. Place the rhizome in the trench so that the growing tip, buds are slightly above the soil surface and the bottom of the rhizome is about 2 inches below the soil surface.

After the trench is filled with soil, the soil should be covered with a thin layer of gravel so that it floats freely once the water is in the bowl. Immediately after planting the rhizomes, add water until the bowl is 4 to 6 inches deep.

A liquid, 20-10-5 or 10-6-4 fertilizer made for pond plants works well for pot-grown lotus. Apply about 4 ounces of fertilizer for every 1 cubic foot of soil in the pot, or follow the directions on the fertilizer package to use the correct amount. A cubic foot is 12 inches long, wide and deep. Begin fertilizing in late spring after the lotus blooms and continue fertilizing the plants once a month until August. Lotus plants do not need fertilizer during the winter months.

Add water to the lotus pot as the water level drops or change the water if the water is dirty or smelly. Insects and pests rarely affect the lotus, although the Missouri Botanical Garden warns that aphids may occasionally try to feed on the plant.

Simply wash off your lotus aphids using a water spray. Set the bowl in a location that receives full, all-day sunlight and temperatures no lower than freezing, 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The bowl can remain outside, if desired, if condensation is not a concern. Lotus leaves may die back in late fall or early winter. Cut off the dead leaves and let the lotus lie dormant until spring.

Sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, the lotus is the national flower of India. This hardy aquatic plant is native to South Asia and Australia, but can be grown in any temperate climate under the right conditions. You can grow lotus from seed or tubers. If you grow lotuses from seed, they usually don’t flower in their first year.

To grow a lotus flower from a tuber, fill a large, round pot with 60% clay and 40% river sand. Leave about 3-4 inches between the top of the soil and the rim of your pot. Press the tuber into the top of the sand, but don’t bury it completely in the soil or it will rot. Lower the container 6-12 inches below the surface of the pond. After your lotus plant has developed at least 6 leaves, drop a pond tablet of aquatic fertilizer into the water near the plant. You will need to repot the lotus every year.
