All the trees are covered with fine decorative sand (preferably red lava rock) and an accent mineral (usually shale or snowflakes/firework obsidian). A fossil rock is a sedimentary mineral that has preserved traces of plants and animals (the creatures are not really visible). Snowflakes and volcanic obsidian are rare types of volcanic glass that show interesting white to red patterns. They are a variety of obsidian that forms when volcanic lava cools slower than normal, allowing the formation of acicular cristobalite, a type of quartz crystal.
