Bonsai Tree Weeds – I hope everyone is having a great summer and your bonsai is doing well. I know I really miss the BSOP meetings and can’t wait to come back and see you all. Meanwhile, I did a lot of work, mowing, watering, fertilizing and spraying. I sometimes do a bonsai mix, either chasing or avoiding sunlight, so that my trees maximize their growth and health this time of year.
One of the biggest challenges I have faced over the years is keeping my trees free of weeds. Last year I vowed that you would know my enemy, Pearl. He took it on the chin and it was definitely a knockdown, but not completely. I’m back at it this summer with tweezers in hand. The challenge is many trees and little time. This and the fact that open, watered bonsai soil provides ideal conditions for weed growth. When things get out of hand, it’s time to bring out the big guns and leave no small weed unscathed. Last year I started experiments that were very successful, so I wanted to share the results with you here.
Bonsai Tree Weeds
The idea came to me when I remembered that Shawnee’s first lady, Anne Spencer, mentioned that she used a small brush to apply Roundup (Glyphsophate) to the leaves of weeds to kill them. Not sure about the other circumstances, but his set was flawless, so whatever he did worked. That being said, my first line of defense against weeds is always tweezers. Angled tweezers to be precise. You need one with a wider head so you don’t just cut weeds. My first recent carpal tunnel surgery trial was actually a painless 45 minute weeding session. I couldn’t do anything before, but now my excuses are gone (duh!).
Ways To Prune A Bonsai Tree
But then life accidentally, and often times, gets in the way of the best intentions and we get overwhelmed by the onslaught of weeds. I knew I didn’t have time to use a brush (I’ve tried a wide flat brush in past years which worked but lacked control) so I thought I’d also try a small stencil that you can use for painting. do. My little projects I have included a picture here so you can see my setup. The roll is only about 3 inches wide.
At this point, I have to put a disclaimer. This is what I consider a very dangerous and risky method. Use it with caution. Years ago I tried Roundup on a wisteria plant to kill weeds and ended up killing the tree slowly. I made two major mistakes at that point. First, I used a spray bottle. This means that we have a lot of chemicals that can penetrate the soil and reach the roots. Second, all my wisteria sit in tubs of water during the summer. I think the extra water acted as a fuse and pulled the roundup into the soil pile. This is something that does not happen in regular programs. This combination was fatal. I knew it would be risky this time, but sometimes you need a calculated risk to come out on top. Enter the roller, which I can use to apply chemicals in smaller, more even amounts.
Roundup works in contact with the leaf surface, so once it hits the soil and dries out, it is effectively ineffective. I can’t speak with more authority on this. But the leaves absorb the chemicals, which are then transferred to the roots and eventually kill the plant. This process can take several weeks, so don’t expect immediate results. I use this method in Pearlwort. Sagina procumbens, also known as Irish moss or Scotch moss (not true moss), but you can use it on any weed. But not muscle. That’s what’s great about Roundup, especially for this use, is that it only works on higher plants, not moss. Your muscle stays nice and green.
Roundup has long been the subject of controversy and I must inform you that after many years a successful lawsuit has recently been filed regarding Roundup. I don’t have details about it, so you can research it if you want. I always wear protective gear like nitrile gloves and goggles when using chemicals. For dilution, it’s easiest to use something you may have already mixed in a landscape sprayer. If not, use the proportions specified on the label. Use the minimum amount of chemical necessary to cover weeds. I put it on the weed and go back and forth in different directions to make sure I’m covered. Be careful, you will get a lot of scraps on the roll and pan, but it really doesn’t matter.
Common Bonsai Tree Species To Grow
The first thing I do in this process is to make sure the trees are well watered. The last thing I want is to go back and water my trees five minutes after applying any kind of chemical. First, I wet it so that the chemicals applied to the surface of the pot or the leaves have a chance to dry completely. Do not use this chemical on rainy days as it will wash off, rendering it useless and possibly damaging the trees. There are other weeds that can be used, such as oxalis (clover) and violets. All three of these weeds have deep roots and tend to break when pulled. Killing them chemically allows you to come back later and clean up the remains. This raises another important issue. Once the weeds are dead, you still need to remove the brown husks, but this is very easy to do at this stage.
You may be reading this and thinking at this point, or much sooner, that I really am crazy. Well, the idea is strong enough for Roundup to make a product that works in a similar way. It looks like a big stick of underarm deodorant. I found it on the Wilco shelf and thought I should try it just for this article. It works like some deodorants. Twist the handle on the end to release a gel from the many holes, then apply it to the leaves of your weed of choice. I don’t think it would work as well as a small paint roller. Plus, you can’t tell how well you weed. I think the product is doomed anyway.
If you’re the type of person who’s going to get down on your knees to put that particular product on a weed in your lawn, you’re probably the type of person who’s going to pull weeds while you’re at it. . I don’t expect it to be the next big fad in gardening. That brings me full circle to my max weed. Tweezers are still your best friend and your number one weapon in the fight against weed tyranny.
