The oldest bonsai tree in the world is over 1000 years old! This bonsai, Ficus retusa linn, is in the Crespi Bonsai Museum in Milan, Italy. Its 10-foot-tall specimen, with its air-dense root network and perfectly balanced silhouette, is a testament to devotion and daily care.

This Ficus Crespi was brought to Italy in 1986, after more than a decade of negotiations between the current and previous custodians, a moment in the life of this ancient tree. Not only is it the oldest bonsai tree in the world, but it is planted in the largest bonsai pot, which was built and burned in one piece.

This Ficus Crespi is the crowning glory of an impressive collection of over 200 eye-catching bonsai trees. While others have attempted bonsai from Crespi, this beloved tree remains in place, inspiring visitors to the museum’s sunny arboretum for years to come.
