Chinese Elm Bonsai Losing Leaves
Is there anything I can do to restore its leaves (eg re-potting, pruning, feeding, pruning, etc.)? Foliage damage may be my fault (please see my other question).

I’ve grown quite a few bonsai and trees and the number one factor affecting their growth, at least as far as I’ve seen, is nitrogen content. Bonsai generally do not like soil with too much nutrients; However, leafy foliage is often affected by inadequate nitrogen levels in the soil. Phosphorus is more for flower growth. So your fertilizer (4-6-6) has more phosphorus and potassium than nitrogen. You want to use a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen.
Kannada Elm does best when grown outdoors. It is not considered a tropical tree. You may choose to focus on fukin tea, ficus, or some other species that have a track record of doing well indoors.
Repot the tree in a 2 or 5 liter pot with fresh, well-drained soil and let the soil almost dry before watering.
Deciduous Bonsai Trees
If all the leaves have fallen, do a small test on the trunk and the main branches, if you see the green of your tree is still alive.
Shouldn’t some bonsai trees be outside during the summer? I have a friend who lives in Inverness and has many naturally occurring bonsai in his garden. You leave them all year round in all kinds of weather and they do well. However, gathering from the wild is even better, I’m not sure how the Kannada Elm will do in the far north?
I would ask the manufacturer for advice or see what he did with the other trees shown. Most of what I’ve seen here is mostly out there, but it’s worth asking. You can also ask any horticultural organizations or bonsai groups online. There are many down south. There are also gardens nearby and many more in the north and you can ask the people there.
As for how cold it gets in winter in Scotland, it depends on where you live. It’s usually the left side that gets the Gulf Streams and warmer than normal winters, and the right side that gets the very cold winters from Europe.

I’ve been to gardens with all kinds of South American trees that grow outside of Shetland and it’s the southernmost part of Greenland. Where I used to work and one person I know has this bonsai is Inverness, which is also geographically further north than Moscow! Near Inverness is a volcanic island known as the Black Isle which does not actually allow ice to freeze on it during the winter. Large leaf drop: We were recently contacted by a customer who purchased a Kannada elm in the fall that had large leaf drop.
If you are reading this and have experienced this too, don’t panic! We have had a particularly good growing season this year (2019), and so we will see more leaves than usual.
Help, Is My Chinese Elm Dying?
This is due to both the favorable growth period and the rapid decrease in temperature that has been observed.
As mentioned in the information you receive when purchasing bonsai from us; You should be prepared for some leaf drop with plant compatibility in your home. This is very common, as we keep the trees in our greenhouses in the best light, heat and humidity conditions. You, of course, will not have the same conditions.
You will see in the photo that there are many new fruits on the tree. So, this tree is alive and well and will start growing new leaves in the next 2-4 weeks.
You only need to make the soil *just* cool to the touch. Do that, and all will be well in no time.

This is my first bonsai. It’s a Kannada Elm that I’ve had for at least a year. I live in London, UK. It is in a room with a ceiling window and a dedicated LED table light that stays on all day and tries to compensate for the limited amount of incoming light (see schedule below). We rinse with water until the water reaches the bottom plate.
I’m A New Bonsai Owner Looking For Chinese Elm Help/advice. I’m Find It’s Getting Very Sparse And Leaves Are Turning Yellow.
Here’s the problem: it goes through a repetitive cycle where it loses all its leaves, grows back, only to lose them again three weeks later. It started in late fall last year and has happened about 4 times now:
I have tried to change the way of feeding, water a few times (but then some molds start to appear on the surface). I also tried an insecticide this last time, it did nothing.
If anyone has any ideas I can try it would be greatly appreciated. My plan is below for reference.
I think your problem is the indoor climate. Bonsai is very difficult to maintain indoors and only some (hot) species will do. Kannada Elm comes from cold temperatures, so it is very difficult to keep it alive indoors. If it is not cold outside, I would suggest putting it outside, and see if the leaves continue. good luck

I have a Kannada Elm that is in the spring and put it in the same place as other Kannada elms in the same order.
The plant matures and after a week or two the leaves start to turn and turn brown/yellow until they fall off.
