Growing Jacaranda Mimosifolia Bonsai From Seed – Jacaranda mimosifolia is a subtropical tree native to southern and central South America that is very popular as an ornamental tree due to its beautiful and long-lasting blue flowers. It has quite complex leaves.
Jacaranda is a semi-evergreen tree from South America and can grow to about 15 m (50 ft) tall and 12 m (40 ft) wide. It also grows in the southern states of the USA, in the Mediterranean countries, South Africa and Australia. Jacaranda has compound fern-like leaves and beautiful blue or purple flowers that are up to 5 cm (2 in) long and are grouped in large panicles. They appear in spring and early summer and last up to two months. The large woody seed pods contain many winged seeds. Jacaranda bark is thin, grey-brown and becomes scaly as the tree matures. The branches are thin and slightly zigzag. Depending on the temperatures and the amount of light, the tree may retain its leaves in winter or drop them. In most cases, the leaves fall before the flowers open.

I recently bought a bonsai starter kit and my seedlings (The Gang) are growing well. The three types I have are:
Each is planted in a small peat pot with dense peat soil that comes in dehydrated discs with the starter pack. Most of what I’ve read says not to repot until the seedlings are a year old.
However, I am concerned that poor soil quality will either stunt their growth or kill the seedlings as they grow. Is it harmful to repot with the correct soil mix and a more suitable pot before the year? And if I have to transplant, what is the safest way to do it? If I don’t need to repot, what is the best way to make sure they are getting enough nutrients?
Note: Move the jacquard inside if you have cold winters. They do poorly when the temperature is below 10C for a long time.

Yes, they are all indoors, watered when the topsoil is dry, rotated daily and moved to get about 6 hours of sunlight per day. I just want to make sure I don’t accidentally kill them if I rearrange early.

Then move them out. Only the tropical has a reason to be inside. The others will die there. Search the forum. The search is there for a reason. Two years ago, in June 2015, I bought a dwarf jacaranda sold by Monrovia under the name ‘Bonsai Blue’ and planted it in a large concrete container on our patio. Click here to read my original post. Many people have asked me how this jacaranda went. It’s time for an update!
Mr Fothergill’s Jacaranda Bonsai Kit
‘Bonsai Blue’ is very lively. It’s actually blooming for the first time! I’m really excited because I wasn’t sure it would ever bloom since it only gets a few hours of direct sun. In full sun I imagine it will be covered in flowers just like a regular full size Jacaranda mimosifolia.
1. First of all, I should have been more proactive about trimming (yeah, what else is new?). As you can see in the first photo, there is one dominant leader that sticks out far above the rest of the branches. I shouldn’t have let that happen. I’m actually tempted to remove the guide completely so all that’s left is the lower foliage. I think a thicker look is more appropriate than what I have now.
2. ‘Bonsai Blue’ (I guess like all jacarandas) really doesn’t like strong winds in winter. Last December it looked like it would make it without losing any leaves. Then came a series of wind storms that completely defoliated it. It took until March for new leaves to grow.
4. ‘Bonsai Blue’ is quite drought tolerant, even in a pot with a limited amount of soil. Mine is drip watered once a week (plus a bit of gray water from the kitchen every now and then when I think about it) and seems perfectly happy with that regime.

5. With regular trimming I think I can keep it small enough that it doesn’t look out of proportion with the container.
Jacaranda ‘Bonsai Blue’ marketed by Monrovia is a true dwarf cultivar developed by Kiyoshi Sakai in Japan. It reaches 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide, compared to a height of 40+ feet for a common Jacaranda mimosifolia. Cold hardiness is the same at 25°F (zone 9b). The first 800 specimens sold from Monrovia were grown under contract in Israel by Hochberg Export Ornamental Plants. Availability is still limited, but hopefully it will be sold in more nurseries (and at a lower price) in the coming years. It no longer supports older versions of your browser to ensure user data remains secure. Please update to the latest version.

The seeds were labeled and packaged very well! And the delivery was very fast. The seeds come with care/growing instructions and a very nice link to a YouTube video to help you get started with planting the seeds properly and starting germination. I am very excited to start my blooming bonsai nursery and hope all these little seeds grow into beautiful trees! 😊 Only time will tell and I hope my green thumb and lots of love will do justice to these plants!
I can’t say enough about the seller, John. I accidentally ordered seeds instead of established cuttings. The seeds arrived lightning fast and the replacement was also sent extremely quickly.
