Hedge Maple Bonsai – Due to its attractive leaf shape and beautiful fall foliage color, the hedge maple bonsai makes a delightful bonsai. However, it is not cultivated as bonsai as its Japanese relatives – Japanese maple bonsai.
In autumn, the leaves turn from green to yellow or orange before falling.

However, it can be grown as a small bonsai where a leaf is the same weight as the leaves and branches of the branch.

Hedge birch can be transplanted every 2-3 years in early spring or late winter. (As soon as new leaves appear. When the leaves are swollen, but not opened).

Cut the roots to hard roots to remove twisted and damaged roots. Do not remove more than a third of the roots.
If you switch to a feed rich in potassium and phosphate in autumn, the color of the leaves will be stronger.

The roots of hedge birch are thick, fleshy and contain a lot of water. Succulent roots can split during prolonged freezing because the water in them expands as it freezes.

When planted in the ground and left to grow for several years, the species will quickly harden as a hedge. This is definitely the easiest tree to train for bonsai. Ok, I know this is a blog about Rocky Mountain Yamadori… but with our beautiful fall, I thought you might enjoy some color.
First, for bonsai nut aficionados like Steve and I, here are a few things you should know: 1) Bonsai trees are real trees; they go through the same seasons as any tree on earth. 2) There is no special type of “Bonsai”. Bonsai can be created from any type of tree, although some make better bonsai than others. For example, trees with very large leaves and thick branches are not easily used in these small environments. 3) Since trees need seasons, we won’t keep them inside. Tropical trees are different in temperate climates, BUT they are more fun outside in the summer. 4) It is easy to observe the seasonal changes of rare trees, but this does not mean that coniferous bonsai do not need seasons. Any tree that experiences seasonal changes in nature will get tired and eventually give up if the seasons (seasons of growth, renewal and rest) are not allowed.

Wild maple (Acer campestre) is a popular bonsai species, especially in England and elsewhere in Europe. The best feature of bonsai cultivation is its strong growth and thickening ability. This can help create strong, slender trunks, but can present some challenges in bonsai pruning.
Acer campestre is a species of maple native to Europe. They are strong and sturdy trees that grow quickly. They can live for hundreds of years and are very tolerant of living in a bonsai pot.
Also known as hedge maple and wild maple, these trees have 3-lobed dark green leaves. These can grow too large for trees in the ground, but can be easily reduced for a tree grown in a pot.
Steps To Good Bonsai
The bark of wild birch is gray or brown. It is soft in young trees, but can develop cracks and splits as the wood ages. The new growth may have a cork-like bark.
Acer campestre bonsai can add beautiful color to your garden year-round. In the spring, their new growth turns pinkish-red. This turns dark green as the leaves mature. Their fall colors are beautiful yellows and oranges.
Field maples are hardy species that like to enjoy full sun during the growing season. If the tree has weak roots or lives in an area with too much sun, you may want to move the tree to dappled shade.
Sun is very important for maple bonsai hedges to reduce internode length as the tree matures. Trees growing in the shade naturally try to grow toward the sun by extending their branches beyond the surrounding canopy. This means leggy growth that is difficult to build a bonsai with good scales.

In winter, unless temperatures drop below 23°F (-5°C), most Acer campestre bonsai will not need protection. However, since they are a frost-hardy variety, they should be treated indoors or moved to a cooler location.
Acer campestre bonsai prefers less watering than other trees, but should be allowed to dry out between waterings to avoid overwatering. When using water, be sure to water the tree thoroughly to ensure the entire root system is moist.
Major design decisions and pruning often occur as the leaves fall in the fall.
This is a good time because the tree is busy absorbing nutrients from its leaves and moving them into its vascular tissues as it prepares for sleep. This flow of resources will allow the tree to bridge the wounds and prevent deaths over large areas. This style also has the advantage of having no leaves on the tree, which helps make the branches visible and makes wiring easier.

Large branches should be removed with a hacksaw to create a very clean cut that will heal well. A small stump should remain along the bonsai stem so that it does not rot. This can be cleared in the next year.
During the growing season, after 2 leaves are strong, new shoots should be pruned each time. You can tell a leaf is ripe by its deep green color and waxy cuticle texture.
In an established birch bonsai area, smaller leaf sizes and finer growth can be achieved using partial defoliation.
Defoliation involves the removal of approximately 70-80% of the leaf mass of a tree. Defoliation will stimulate the tree to grow a second time, but because it uses most of its stored energy in the first watering, the second growth will be better, with stronger internodes and smaller leaves.

Some experts recommend going a step further and removing their bonsai entirely, e.g. remove all the leaves. Of course, this can have good results, but be warned that by removing all the cover, if you cannot grow the leaves, there is a risk of the tree dying.
The advantage of defoliation is that you can ensure that the tree still has something to build on because it always has some leaves to generate energy. If you keep the leaves at the end of the branches, you can also help the flow of water and resources through the vascular tissue, which can help with growth.
