Japanese holly is a truly beautiful bonsai material and is highly sought after for its naturally small leaves, white flowers, and tiny blackberry-like fruits. Holly trees bear fruit only when male and female trees are side by side and flower simultaneously.
Holly Tree Bonsai
Japanese holly grows well outdoors in spring, summer and fall, and like many other bonsai trees it does not tolerate the Canadian winter. For winter holly care tips, see our Winter Care Guide.
My Japanese Holly Bonsai Looks Like Its Drying And Dying Slowly. Is This Normal, Or Something To Be Concerned With? The Soil Is Not Dry And The Room Temperature Is Around 22c :
Japanese holly is also known to do well indoors all year round. Although it takes a little more effort. Place it on a moisture tray that is always kept under water. It is not recommended to water Japanese holly until it dries out completely. Holly loves moisture. It should be in well-drained soil to protect the roots from root rot.
This is not a seed – but a real bonsai tree, see Bonsai selection page, ages and sizes for different stages of bonsai (baby, young, adult).
Bonsai soil is usually a mixture of organic potting compost (pine bark or forest floor), akadama, pumice, and lava rock in varying amounts.
It is important that the soil has good water retention while being well drained and aerated. Soil quality directly affects the health, size and growth of trees. One of the worst things you can do to a tree is to plant it in plain garden soil. Garden soil hardens when dry and can often cause a condition when planting bonsai.
How To Take Care Of A Bonsai Tree
Soil mix can be purchased here, but considering the weight and shipping cost, you can easily make your own.
If you can’t check your Bonsai’s moisture level every day, add more Akadama to the mix.
One of the best and easiest ways to fertilize your Bonsai is to add a liquid fertilizer mixture when you water your Bonsai once a month in spring/summer. If your bonsai loses its leaves in winter, then you don’t need to fertilize it. If you have conifers, fertilizing once in early winter and once in mid-winter is sufficient.
This holly bonsai arrived well packaged and in good condition. I’m excited to add one of the store’s beautiful bonsai plants to my collection. I am very happy with this plant so far.

It is a historical tree. bible tree. Like in the 70’s/early 80’s. Wow!

Jokes aside, today you’ll see three different holly trees for entertainment and recreation. Let’s start with our first product, ilex crenata “soft touch”.
The leaves are very similar to my favorite holly, the little yoppon (second tree above), but its leaves are more chrome oxide green than the hooker green of yoppon. And the leaves have much of the curved quality that most holly trees have.
He is also a drinking farmer. It took me years to find a trunk like this in kindergarten.
It is considered a Japanese holly, but it is not a common deciduous tree that is always seen with its stunning red berries (Ilex serrata).
Japanese Holly In Early Development
This variety “Soft Touch” grows like i. In any case, Vomitoria is “shilling”. Look at that branch! Day Mmm. And this one was on a wholesale liner nursery! It’s hard to believe.
I’m not sure how well these varieties will respond to the bonsai technique, but using logic and reasoning (I know, I know, where has it taken me in the past? Are you going to remove it from the moon? Yes, that logic has taken me a lot I ran into trouble… ..) It’s safe to say that this tree will respond to pruning. . Sooooooo… A bit of pruning… And if I kill it, I’m left with those two.
That’s better It’s not very good, but it’s about as good as it gets. I think I will come back here.
If you turn it upwards, it seems to lower it a little to make it easier to move.

Now many will stop there. I’m not. you know me If you don’t like selling meat, avoid your eyes and come down quickly.
I hope this survives treatment. of course. I’m sure it can handle high pruning. that fence thing. It is pruning the root of worry. I’ve grown several types of holly, but I haven’t grown a Crenata yet. we will see
Let us work with the next holly tree, the Chinese holly, to comfort those who suffer from that last tree.
This is an interesting example of this type of tree. It’s also a very common hedge plant (usually planted where you want to keep people out, such as under windows), so its stems tend to be trunk-like. This looks like what root cuttings could be to me. Don’t ask about the pot. I sold this and a few other trees for another finished bonsai. The pot looks like it came from a thrift store. If the wood is well matched, it can become a ceramic work.
My First Try At Making Bonsai, Yaupon Holly “stokes Dwarf” Ilex Vomitoria
I have experience with this type of attenuation. I don’t fully hug and keep the green tips. Loves to drop branches and doesn’t have much to lose.
The upper leaves with ferocious spines on their sides give it its name. merciless. Comparing the last two photos, you can see that two types of leaves can appear on a tree. If left to grow, it will produce unsightly leaves. When you cut back you usually get a bad one. It could be a defensive response, but I’m not sure. Continue pruning and increase the ripple effect enough to reduce the size by half.
I don’t have the pot I want, so I’m going to use a terracotta pot for water lilies.
You will see additional drainage holes on the sides. This is called an azalea pot that requires good drainage. Holly will benefit from this too. They are water wise plants.

Next: Big Boy. It is full of fire ants. I hate fire ants. The red/orange spots are all ants. There was a real crowd at the root of this tree. I sprayed enough napalm and lit a match afterwards… In fact, it was the only insecticidal soap I used to kill them. They may look like giant ants that can build living bridges and floating ant islands and more, but individually they are as fragile as you and me. If there are not enough workers, the queen loses. There is a lesson there. Anyway, die, ants, die!
Then. The second holly tree will quickly look like a bonsai. It’s easy to see where he’s going.
Ilex “soft touch” has an unusual shape. Here’s a more or less accurate view of what I think the proper branches are and how everything might look.
This next visible future is completely fictitious. The extrapolation is actually only based on where I left the stubs.
Dwarf Yaupon Holly, Holly Collection From Livebonsaitree
New branches will sprout from many places throughout this flea. It will look like a tree again soon.
And to show that you know what I’m talking about ilex, here’s a beautiful one I just cropped in the spring.
