Japanese Bonsai Pots For Sale – Bonsai pots are one of the most important elements in creating a beautiful bonsai display. Choosing the right pot can make a tree stand out by adding or contrasting bonsai elements. For example, by choosing a bonsai pot with soft lines and gray color, the undulating movement of the trunk in an informal upright pine bonsai style will be added and enhanced. There are many famous periods and creators of bonsai pots, from ancient China to the modern West, to study as you progress in your bonsai education. Here we will look at just a few outstanding examples.
Tokoname bonsai pots are those produced in the Tokoname region of Japan. Located in central Honshu, Japan, near Nagoya, Tokoname is well known for producing all kinds of ceramics, from roof tiles to toilets and bonsai pots. What makes Tokoname pots so sought after is the type of clay found in the area, which has a purple hue and soft texture, as well as the craftsmanship that the Tokoname makers put into each pot. For example, the unglazed rectangular pot by creator Reiho shown here is a perfect example of smooth purple clay used to build a nearly perfect pot with straight edges and perfect proportions for use with bonsai trees.

Kowatari bonsai pots are those that were made in China before 1800 CE. Although this pottery comes from many places in China, the most common Kowatari pots come from Yixing (near Shanghai) and Cochin (South China or North Vietnam). In the 1970s and 1980s, it became popular to export these pots from China to Japan for use on bonsai at Japan’s Kokufu-ten National Bonsai Exhibition. Today, many Kowatari pots that were exported to Japan decades ago are brought back to China, where wealthy Chinese collectors buy them back. Common Kowatari colors are shudei, shidei, shirokochi and namako.

Nakawatari bonsai pots are those produced in China between 1800-1911 CE. The term Nakawatari means medium cross and refers to the period when the pots were produced and many imported to Japan (although most of this pottery was imported to Japan in the 1970s and 1980s). Nakawatari pots are used with both softwood and hardwood species and are typically characterized by a rounded bottom and narrow front to back. These bonsai pots are best for older trees for display. Common Nakawatari colors are shudei, shidei, shirokochi, aokochi and namako.
Modern Chinese bonsai pots have gained a bad reputation in recent decades due to their perceived poor quality and mass production. However, it should be noted that most of these pots are produced in the Yixing region of China, just outside Shanghai, where there are actually dozens of kilns of varying quality. Yixing clay is known for its purple color and smooth texture, similar to the Japanese Tokoname bonsai pot. Many of our bonsai at Eisei-en are kept in modern, high-quality Yixing pots, like the pines here.
Over the past two decades, as bonsai has become more popular in the United States, the demand for high-quality American bonsai pots has increased. Drawing on the traditions of Japanese and Chinese pottery, American potters have expanded the concept of the bonsai pot by experimenting with unique colors, shapes and textures. Today there are many great bonsai potters from the US, including Sara Rayner, Byron Myrick, Stacy Allen Muse and Roy Minarai. The tree pictured here is a Japanese snowdrop planted in a Roy Minarai bonsai pot.
European bonsai potters also draw on the traditions of Japan, using local clays, glazes and cultural motifs to create some of the most unique bonsai pots in the world. The culture of each country is reflected in some way in the respective bonsai pots created in each region. Some of our favorite European potters include Fukurou Keramik (Switzerland), Stonemonkey pots (England) and Fanda Keramik (Czech Republic). The pot pictured here is a mushikui or bug-eating pot from Stonemonkey Ceramics. This indented square pot is a stunning dark brown, unglazed color. This pot is a great size and is made by Yamaaki.
