It is important to maintain a water well for the soil, but at the same time, drain and aerate the water well very well. Soil quality directly affects tree health, size and growth. One of the worst things you can do to a tree is to plant it in regular garden soil. Garden soil tends to harden when dry, which can often cause weakness when growing bonsai.

One of the best and easiest ways to fertilize your bonsai is to add a liquid fertilizer mix when watering your bonsai once in the spring/summer months. If your bonsai loses its leaves in winter, it does not need fertilizer. If you have bees, it is enough to fertilize the tree once in early and mid-winter.
