Bonsai trees are considered smaller versions of full-sized trees and have become increasingly popular over the years. Bonsai trees look decorative inside the house or in a beautiful zen garden, but they are all needed. Natural light produces the visible spectrum and is not only a source of energy, but also a much needed information. Plants respond to light quality, intensity, duration and direction. This is because it is necessary for germination, growth, induction of protective substances, and photosynthesis necessary for changing from vegetative growth to fruits and flowers.
The light that humans can see is between 400 nm and 700 nm, a range of wavelengths called photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and most of the light that plants need is in this range. However, they use different wavelengths. For example, UV light (280 – 400 nm) is important for optimal growth and far infrared (700 – 800 nm) is important for flowers and fruits. Known photoreceptors are most efficient in the blue and red ranges of the spectrum. Plants also reflect a significant portion of light in the green range, while absorbing a higher percentage of blue and red light, as shown in the following figure.
Creating a lighting environment for a bonsai isn’t too difficult when you think about it, but it should be cost-effective and easy to construct and maintain. Several methods are already in use, including those used in domestic lighting and professional horticultural production.
How To Grow A Gardenia Bonsai
Home lighting has undergone tremendous changes as conventional light bulbs have disappeared from the market and been replaced by energy-saving light bulbs. The three main types of conventional light bulbs are CFLs, (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) halogens, and LEDs. (Light Emitting Diodes) For example, they all have different values in lighting characteristics. Watts and Lumens – The brightness of a light bulb was measured in watts, which is a measure of power, for example 40W, 60W, and 75W. However, measuring the wattage of an energy-saving light bulb is less useful for measuring brightness because a new light bulb uses much less power to produce the same amount of light. So output is measured in lumens, and the higher the lumens number, the brighter the light.
Incandescent lamp – (can still be found), usually transparent or opaque, with a tungsten filament inside. These bulbs gave off a warm amber light and were common in homes, but the cost was “on the wall” to consumers. Besides, their ability to provide enough light for plant growth was negligible at best. Because plants couldn’t produce the wavelengths of light they needed.
CFL – Comes in a variety of sizes and outputs and is considered to be 4x more efficient than incandescent bulbs. Fluorescent lighting systems have a typical light efficiency of 50-100 lumens per watt, many times higher than incandescent bulbs with comparable light output, and are more cost-effective. However, some CFL lights can be expensive because they require a ballast to regulate the current through the lamp, but the lower energy cost offsets the higher initial cost.
As mentioned in the introduction, we tested different lighting settings over a period of two years to test their effectiveness in bonsai cultivation. The image below shows a luminaire with 2 x 13W – T5 CFLs producing 3000K providing 980 lumens.

This system showed that the angle and spread of the location (8 cm above the leaf canopy) produced the best PAR. Some of the smaller plants will need to be lifted to allow light to penetrate the lower leaf area. In short, this type of CFL light works more or less as an inexpensive ‘wall mount’, but it’s just white light, not the full spectrum needed for robust growth. Nonetheless, CFL bulbs are currently available in warm/red (2700K), full spectrum or daylight (5000K) and cool/blue (6500K) versions. A CFL compact or tubular ‘growth light’ has a useful life of about 10,000 hours and produces 44-80 lumens/watt depending on the bulb and manufacturer’s wattage.
Other light sources, including halogen, HID, (High Intensity Discharge) HPS, (High Pressure Sodium), and LED, (Light Emitting Diode) were investigated for alternative solutions, but the main priorities are: Full spectrum and (b) cost effective. Now let’s take a quick look at their abilities.
Halogen – Because both use a tungsten filament, they are similar in color and quality to incandescent light bulbs, and the amount of energy used differs little depending on the bulb’s wattage. Halogens are much brighter, but cannot produce blue and red wavelengths like incandescent lights. Halogen lights also cost more to operate than other energy-saving devices and have an expected lifespan of less than two years, so you’re unlikely to pay the bills before replacing your halogen lamps.
HID lamps can outperform all other lamps in lumens per watt efficiency and produce a color spectrum comparable to the sun. Containing metal halide, high pressure sodium and conversion bulbs, these lighting systems are available from several manufacturers in 150W, 250W, 400W, 600W and 1000W. The most popular in this range and the most electrically efficient in terms of light produced is the 600W HID lamp which produces 7% more light on a watt-per-watt basis. However, all HID lights operate on the same principle, and different bulb types have different starting and voltage requirements, as well as different operating characteristics and physical form. So even if you physically screw the bulb in, the bulb won’t work properly unless you use a proper ballast. Mismatched bulbs and ballasts may stop working early or burn out immediately.

HPS – Lighting is also used as a single light source throughout the vegetative and reproductive stages and can be switched to full spectrum lighting during the reproductive stages. They emit light in the yellow/red part of the spectrum suitable for promoting flowers and fruits. However, when used in the vegetative phase, i.e. roots, stems and leaves, as in bonsai development, plants will grow a little faster but have longer internodes that lose density.
HPS lights provide up to six times more light output per watt of energy consumed than standard incandescent bulbs due to their long usable bulb life and high efficiency. However, in the northern hemisphere, metal halide lamps are needed during seasons of lack of sunlight. It produces blue and violet wavelengths to balance the light spectrum for proper growth.
LED technology was introduced to the growing lighting market by developing diodes that produce specific wavelengths of light (the red and blue parts of the spectrum). NASA has tested LED grow lights for their high efficiency in growing food in space for extraterrestrial colonization. LEDs use nearly 90% less energy than other conventional grow lighting formats, making them the most energy-efficient type of lighting. However, while they are usually more expensive to purchase, they can last up to 25 years depending on the manufacturer and are the cheapest option in the long run.
