Some trees require a certain number of chill hours, which is the amount of time spent below a certain temperature, in order to produce. Keep this in mind when deciding which strain to grow.

For example, apple trees require an average of 1,000 cooling hours per year. To make things easier, choose a strain that thrives in your growing area.

Also, make sure you know how much sun exposure your chosen strain needs to produce a crop. While your tree might otherwise grow well in low light conditions, it may not produce those wonderful treats without the sun it needs.

Almost all fruit trees need to be grown outdoors full-time. If you couldn’t hypothetically grow a full-sized species indoors, you couldn’t grow the bonsai variety indoors either.

The key to growing more leaves is also needed to keep the roots, trunk and fruit healthy. It helps the plant form proteins, vitamins and enzymes that the whole plant needs.

In other words, a plant needs all of these macronutrients to grow. It will absorb what it needs and the rest will run off with the excess when you water.

However, that doesn’t mean you can use too much fertilizer and just let the excess run off—this can be toxic, raising sodium levels in the soil to dangerous levels.

An exception is if you notice that the fruits are small and underdeveloped, or if they have not started to form at all. If this happens, it may help to test the substrate to see if it is deficient in potassium.

If you notice that the substrate has a low potassium content, add a little more with a product that does not increase the salt content.

Pruning is something that anyone who grows a bonsai should master, but it is especially important for those who grow fruit trees.

Not only should you follow general pruning principles, but you should also prune it to encourage ideal fruiting.

For example, if you’re growing a blueberry, remember that the best berries form on canes that are between one and four years old. After that they don’t produce well.

Skilled craftsmen create a large central trunk with many canes extending from the top to create a canopy, then cut back a few older canes each year to keep the plant producing while maintaining the attractive shape.
