Smoke Tree Bonsai – The alcove display in my studio is changed from time to time depending on the time of year, expected guests, bonsai class, or other special occasions. The end of spring and the beginning of summer are especially colorful. Due to the harsh winter, spring came “late”, and summer a little earlier. Enjoy various exhibits created in early summer.
It is a tall shrub or a small tree in the garden. It is grown in spring for its unusual smoke-like flowers.
Smoke Tree Bonsai
The most common smoke tree is the ‘Royal Purple’ variety, known for its purple leaves and pink flowers.

Another unusual variety of smoke tree is ‘Golden Spirit’ with bright yellow leaves and bright pink flowers. All three varieties have rich red and orange fall color. This bonsai has only been in training for three years in a two gallon jar nursery. Maybe with more water and some shade the leaves would be bigger and gold, but I’m trying to keep the leaves and flower size down while maintaining “sensible neglect”. planted in front of our house.
Since it is summer, the display table I chose has a carved bamboo design. Being made of bamboo, it is not suitable for planting bamboo rafts because it will overlap.
An oval ceramic pot was chosen to plant a dwarf hosta, because the smoke tree grows in a round pot. A dwarf hosta in a blue glass pot was used as the smoke tree was in an unglazed container.
A companion planting of Black Mondo Grass was also used as a contrast between the golden leaves and smoke tree foliage. But it didn’t look good on a bamboo raft, so a wooden plate was used.

A shrub with graceful vine branches. The bonsai is now in full bloom and also has some pink berries that appeared last summer.
After summer flowering, yellow flowers drop and small brown buds appear. Most people assume that the plant has finished flowering and the remaining brown buds have been pruned off. However, leaving brown buds on the tree over winter will result in fully pink fruit the next summer. Therefore, if you prune your bonsai in late summer to make it look neat, it will not bear fruit the following year.
The Berchemia bonsai is now in full bloom and also has some pink berries that appeared last summer. The rough shell looks old and it really is. I have been growing this bonsai in a container for over thirty years. It may fatten on the ground, but I have never seen a large specimen. Due to its long branches, it has a more naturalistic shape, even with branches crossed in front, but not touching the trunk.
Berchemia is represented here by a companion planting dwarf hosta. But this is a poor choice because both vessels are round and also blue glazed. So I made a small bird figure out of a round wood slab to contrast with the rectangular display table for Berhemia.
Plants Of Smoke Tree
‘Bayltiger’ is a new sumac that was introduced a few years ago. It is grown for its shiny golden leaves and red berries. The color is very attractive in the garden and forms a focal point near the outdoor alcove display area. More information about this variety and how this bonsai was created can be found in this blog from August 2013. The leaves of this plant reduce in just two growing seasons.
The dwarf hosta, displayed on a casually styled bamboo slat, tried to make it out with bright yellow leaves and red flowers.
A geometric circular bamboo wood slab was tested, but the round tiger-eye sumac “root display table” did not contrast well enough with the circular wood slab. In the end, an informal, irregular-length handcrafted wooden slab was chosen. This unusual plate was a gift from Mark Arpag, who also engraved it. As you can see, there is a large bulge on the left trunk, and I wonder if that size is leading to a reverse taper (or will in the near future).
Also, with all the branches on this trunk, should I let it grow for a season and then thin it out?

It’s probably not as good as my quality, but I think if you go into building the branch structure, it can be distributed quite well based on the structure I have.
I think you need to get through all the layers and focus on healthy growth for a few more seasons and develop the twin road you envision. Later… if you don’t like the twin trunks, you can cut the second trunk to create nice features. Smoke trees look great with carved features…they often have many broken branch features in their natural setting. Scars on smoke trees can be very attractive.
Would continue to grow. If it’s bigger… stop decisions after additional growth. I think you will find a great carving option that will eliminate the appearance of the bulge.

I think you have a big tree growing. It needs a bit of growth to appear mature.

These are really interesting trees/shrubs, I have lime green/yellow leaves and I was wondering if I would grow the green variety as well as they appear to be bulletproof. I wish I would have built my case only 75mm tall instead of 150mm.
I also like the box you built. I was thinking of using “plywood” since it’s only 10mm? thick and not as heavy as my first attempt at a box.
