Stone Pine Bonsai Care – For bonsai, pine is especially popular, and many people consider it the most common bonsai tree. Pine is a resinous evergreen conifer with two to five bundles of needles.
Two popular semi-annual pine trees are native to Japan and grow along the coast. Storms in June often cut off the new buds and the trees then adjust to a new flush. Japanese black pine is a strong tree with two clumps of long, dark green, hard needles. Grows more or less by the coast. Japanese red pine is more slender, slender, softer and has thin pairs of needles similar to Scots pine. It grows slightly more uphill than the coast. It has a thin pair of needles that can twist slightly, and the bark on the upper part of the trunk is often reddish in color. Ponderosa pine is native to western North America and the Rocky Mountains. It is a tall tree with very long needles in clusters of three. Old Ponderosa pine bark has yellow to orange or even pink plates and black cracks. Mountain pine is native to the highlands of Europe and often forms hollow bushes on the bedrock near the treeline. It has short, stout, dark green, double needles and dark brown bark. Its wood is very fibrous and resinous. Finally, Pinus aristata (Bristlecone Pine, Rocky Mountain Pine) grows mostly in Colorado and New Mexico. A red pine: Japanese white pine (Pinus parviflora), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), mountain pine (Pinus mugo or Mugo pine).

It is important to understand where our pine species live in the wild, what their characteristics are and how to properly treat them as bonsai trees. Japanese black and red pines may lose their first growth and some of their leaves due to storms that occur in Japan in early or mid-summer. Then they can grow a second time and ripen in the fall. A bonsai artist can replicate this event by placing short needles on closer shoots to create additional branches. But the growing season must be long enough for the second time to fully develop.

Fertilize weak trees throughout the year unless the temperature is too low. Fertilize healthy trees from early spring (March) to early summer until you cut the candles. Solid organic fertilizer should be applied at least 3 times at 4 week intervals before the candles are removed. Fertilization is then stopped until the growth of secondary candles hardens.
